Dangers of Artificial Intelligence

In May 2026, Pope Leo XIV published his first major encyclical,  ("Magnificent Humanity"), specifically dedicated to safeguarding the human person in the era of AI.

  • The Historical Parallel: The Pope explicitly signed the document on the 135th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s landmark 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the social upheaval of the Industrial Revolution. He noted that just as safeguards were needed then to protect workers, strict ethical boundaries are required now to manage the AI revolution.

  • Rejection of "Technocratic Neutrality": He argued that technology is never neutral and inevitably reflects the commercial or political interests of those who fund and design it, warning against letting tech elites alone dictate the future of humanity.

⚠️ Core Warnings & Ethical Demands

The Vatican's warnings center around several key areas where AI poses a threat to society:

  • Military & Autonomous Warfare: The Pope issued an absolute boundary against surrendering lethal combat decisions to automated systems, calling for AI to be "disarmed" and ensuring humans always retain ultimate responsibility over the use of weapons.

  • Labor & Corporate Accountability: Expressing concern over mass job losses and inequality driven by automation, he called on governments to mandate the retraining of displaced workers and urged tech developers to temper their competitive acceleration.

  • Societal Threats: He warned that unchecked AI amplifies misinformation, facilitates deepfakes, expands invasive surveillance, and risks exposing children to violent or hypersexualized AI-generated content online.
