Biblical and Traditional Descriptions
• The Morning Star: Lucifer means “light-bringer” or “morning star.” Historically, it referred to the planet Venus.

Adornment of Gold and Gems: In Ezekiel 28:13–14, the figure traditionally connected with Lucifer is described as a guardian cherub covered with precious stones, including ruby, sapphire, emerald, and gold.

Angel of Light: Second Corinthians 11:14 says that Satan can disguise himself as an “angel of light.” This helped create images of a bright or shining figure.

The use of “Lucifer” as a proper name for the Devil developed through translation and later theology.

1. The Biblical Origin (Isaiah 14:12)
The Hebrew phrase in Isaiah 14:12 is hêlēl ben-šāḥar, meaning “shining one, son of the dawn.” The passage is a poetic attack on the proud King of Babylon. It uses a local story about the morning star trying and failing to rise above the other stars as a picture of the king’s political fall.

2. The Latin Translation
In the 4th century CE, Jerome translated the Hebrew image into the Latin word lucifer, the ordinary word for the morning star. It was still a description, not a personal name.

3. Shift into Satan’s Proper Name
Early Christian writers such as Tertullian and Origen connected the fall of the Babylonian king with the fall of Satan. Later, the King James Version kept Lucifer as a capitalized name instead of translating it as “day star” or “morning star.” This helped popularize the idea that Lucifer was Satan’s angelic name before his fall.

The “Morning Star” Paradox: Jesus and Lucifer
Jesus is also called the “Bright and Morning Star” in Revelation 22:16. In this interpretation, Satan’s morning-star image represents created glory that was corrupted by pride, while Jesus represents unchanging divine light. This subject can also be studied through the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin terms, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and other biblical uses of star imagery.
