Led by designer Chris Roberts, he project has broken crowd-funding records, raising over $800 million. It splits into two core components: an ambitious open-world massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience known as the Persistent Universe, and a standalone cinematic single-player campaign named Squadron 42.
The Core Game Modes
The Persistent Universe (PU): The main, shared sandbox MMO. Players create an avatar, choose a profession (such as trading, bounty hunting, mining, or salvage), and fly highly-detailed spaceships with fully traversable interiors. It blends space flight with first-person shooter (FPS) combat mechanics, featuring seamless transitions from orbit down to planetary surfaces.
Squadron 42 (SQ42): The single-player story campaign featuring an elite starfighter wing. It is slated for a Q2 2027 release and is currently available for wishlisting on Steam and the official RSI site.

Squadron 42 (Single-Player Campaign)
The highly anticipated standalone cinematic single-player story, Squadron 42, is officially targeting a Q2 2027 release date. Cloud Imperium Games has launched its official Steam Store Wishlist Page alongside an RSI website wishlist tracker. Limited gameplay previews held under NDA for select players received highly positive feedback regarding its narrative fidelity, though minor technical bugs remain the core focus of ongoing optimization. Once Squadron 42 ships, the majority of the development team is planned to pivot back to delivering the non- alpha "Star Citizen 1.0" commercial build
