Service & Memorial Details
Rank: Private (Pte.)
Date of Death: 24 June 1943
Cause of Death: While individual medical records vary, the vast majority of POW deaths on the railway during the mid-1943 "speedo" period were caused by cholera outbreaks, severe malnutrition, beriberi, dysentery, and tropical ulcers combined with overwork.
Resting Place: Allied prisoners who died in the camps along the railway were later consolidated into official war cemeteries. Depending on his regiment, his final resting place or commemoration is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Most casualties from this sector are buried at either Kanchanaburi War Cemetery or Chungkai War Cemetery in Thailand.
Historical Context
By June 1943, the construction of the railway was at its peak. The Japanese engineers pushed the workforce under brutal conditions to meet a strict deadline. This timeframe coincided with the monsoon season, making camp conditions horrific, turning ground into deep mud, and cutting off essential medicine and food supplies.
